THE HISTORY OF ALLENSWORTH, CALIFORNIA

The town of Allensworth, CA was named after it’s founder, Colonel Allen Allensworth. He was an escaped slave who went on to serve in the Union’s military during the Civil War. After serving in the Army, Colonel Allensworth purchased land and founded Allensworth in 1908 based on the principle of economic self-determination. The African American town quickly grew and prosper. Despite challenges, the town of Allensworth thrived until the Colonel’s death in 1914. One hundred years later, TAC is continuing the Colonel’s vision of self-determination and economic development through sustainable agriculture.
